My mead batch is still aging and currently tastes like gasoline, and I'm saving my wine for something in the future, so I've decided to try beer. I've drank beer on a few ocassions before many many years ago when I was younger by accident and I distinctly remember absolutely hating it as most kids would, as such I've never had much drive to try it again until now. To start I grabbed a couple of brands to try: modelo especial, modelo negra, corona familiar, guinness extra stout, cantaritos by jarritos (pina), mikes harder lemonade, and heineken 0.0 for shits n giggles.
I tried the modelo especial first, which may have been a mistake to my non-beer accustomed taste buds. Very much suffered trying to finish the 24oz can, biggest note being that it was just so fucking bitter. I like bitterness to a degree, I enjoy bitter drinks and tea, but this was a bitterness I was not used to and was actually very hard to swallow. About midway I began getting used to the flavor but by then it was already becoming flat and warm.
Next, I tried the non-alcoholic heineken just out of curiousity, not the worst, tasted surprisingly close to regular beer, much less bitter than the especial, and overall I didn't mind drinking it. Wouldn't go out of my way to grab some but when I'm in the mood for beer but can't be drinking it's pretty nice. Coming back to it after drinking the modelo negra and guinness there is a very noticeable wheaty taste.
Then came the guinness. I was quite excited for this one as I enjoy sweet malt drinks and was hoping it would have somewhat of a similar flavor despite being unsweetened. I was very wrong. I was not much of a fan of this one originally as it was very bitter in a black coffee sort of way with the taste and sweetness of dark chocolate, after having more it's grown on me a little bit. The chocolately taste really comes through and the sweetness helps with the bitterness somewhat, not my first choice but I wouldn't turn it down.
The Modelo Negra. I was genuinely shocked trying this one, after the guinness I had anticipated another fairly bitter drink but instead it was incredibly smooth and not that bitter, there was a little bit of that chocolate taste coming through but not as much as the guinness. Absolutely my favorite beer so far, the taste is fantastic and it's smooth enough to really drink without the bitterness or carbonation getting in the way.
Cantaritos (by jarritos). I did not know this existed and mostly got it purely for the hell of it. Horrible fucking concoction. I got the pina flavor and it is genuinely vile, and it gets worse with every sip. It tastes like expired juice extract and it's incredibly sweet, not in a soda kind of sweetness but a sickly sort of sweet, where the more you have the more you feel awful. Would probably not even drink it even if it was offered.
Mikes harder lemonade. Absolutely vile, I don't know any other way to describe the taste. Not as bad as the cantaritos but close, could possibly drink again purely for the fact that it's a cheap 8% ABV drink, however better options are most likely available.
