Woke up early as hell and decided to check facebook marketplace, finding this beast of a lot -
It was much more than I'm normally willing to spend on marketplace, coming to around 70USD, but due to the quantity and oddity (of which I'll get to later) of some of the sets I decided to just go for it. All together it was about $6.80 an item, which is about what I normally get VCRs/DVD players for anyway, however is a very good price for the recievers and speakers, so it was a pretty good deal despite the upfront cost. Was originally worried because I had messaged the seller relatively late (about 12 hours after the listing went up) and I knew there were many audiophiles and resellers in my area that would have jumped onto the deal immediately. Thankfully I eventually got a response back and I went to go pick it up, I caught the train 2 fucking times, almost missed a highway exit (no road sign), and then missed a turn by 2 miles (backroads also with no road signs), but I finally made it and was able to pick them up.
Now on to the interesting part. Of course there are a bunch of cool shit within the lot, but what really caught my eye at first was the machine second from the bottom on the left - a surround sound reciever with a vcr built in
unfortunately the vcr section did not have an composite audio out (only having ports for surround sound) but as my tv has mono audio it's not much of an issue as I typically just plug my headphones directly into a separate reciever anyway when watching movies. I actually can't find that much information on the history behind it, although I also haven't tried going on a full deep dive looking into it. so far the only bits I can find are personal sourceless accounts from a few blogs/youtube videos claiming it to be "specifically designed for a japanese market to incentivize consumers in a time when DVD had begun getting its foot in the door". No idea whether or not it's true but it is an interesting creature regardless.
Accidentally scared myself while testing this and thought the power supply was broken as it wouldn't turn on, before realizing I had forgotten to actually plug it in.
The second particularly interesting piece, which is likely a bit more popular/known (in design atleast), is right below the vcr. The sony CDP-CX-335 300 disc CD changer.
Being what I can only imagine as one of the absolute least reliable types of CD player mechanisms followed by carousels, this fucking beast really can slot in 300 CDs. They're loaded in through the front similar to a slide projector, which means you also get the fun of hearing your forgotten discs fly inside if you decide moving the system. Currently nonfunctional, it seems that some belts have snapped inside which is typical for old belts and should be an easy fix, I don't have nearly a large enough CD library to really use this yet so I'm not too concerned with repairs at the moment. It also has a fucking ps/2 keyboard port for some reason???
Upon opening mine to check the belts I found out the guy i bought it from left an absolute shitton of CDs, almost a third of the entire tray. Unfortunately the previous owner was an older midwestern white guy and as such there weren't really any notable albums, largely being comprised of 60s-80s hits, christian music, country, and a bit of boomer rock.
The rest are more average but still very nice, everything seems to be working apart from the tape deck which also needs some new belts but overall pretty good deal. have not tested the speakers yet on account of having no wire for it, but I'll probably try them out eventually.
